Archives: Aberdeen A lose their Interleague crown
Posted on Tuesday, April 18 2006 @ 12:55:48 BSTby adpladmin
National Pool News Mike writes The SEPF Interleague took on a new format at a new venue this year. The emphasis was on more pool to get played over a weekend and the format and venue proved to be favourable with almost all of the competitors and spectators.
The new venue was Pettycur Bay Caravan Park, Kinghorn in Fife. The complex where the event was hosted was set up perfectly within an arena with seating for everyone who was playing or wanted to watch.

16 teams were split into 4 groups and played a round robin with each match the best of 21 frames (3 sets of 7). After the round robin the top 2 teams progressed to the knock-out stages where a group winner player a group runner-up. From here on it was straight knock-out to determine a winner...

Group 1
This proved to be the group of death as 3 of the top teams were drawn together in Aberdeen A, Fraserburgh A & Elgin A. Making up the group were Styx C.
The first round of matches saw Aberdeen A come out on top 11-8 over Styx C and Fraserburgh A edged out Elgin A 11-10. The second round of matches Saw Elgin win their first match 11-8 against Aberdeen A and Fraserburgh gave Styx C their second defeat 11-8. The third round of matches went ahead with 3 teams vying for the top 2 places in the group. Aberdeen A needed to beat Fraserburgh A and hope for Elgin A to slip up against Styx C. Aberdeen A never really got into gear as Fraserburgh won their match 11-5. On the other table Styx C were showing the effects of the Saturday Night as some of their team failed to appear for their match. The frames that could have been played were played but Styx C were unable to win a frame as Elgin ran out comfortable winners and progress through to the knock-out stages.

Group 2
This group saw Stonehaven A, Styx B, Elgin B & Aberdeen B drawn together. Elgin B failed to show so the other teams were awarded 11-0 victories against them. The first match in the group saw Aberdeen B beat Styx B 11-0 with some nervy frames from both teams. The next match was Styx B v Stonehaven B. Stonehaven were the favourites for this match but the Styx team hung on for as long as they could and eventually lost out 11-8. The last match in the group was to determine the winner & runner-up of the group. Stonehaven A started this match as slight favourites and it proved to be right as they won through 11-10.

Group 3
Montrose, Fraserburgh B, Boddam & Cruden A & Scottish Univerties were drawn in this group. The first round of matches saw the University team lose 11-3 to Montrose and The Boddam team lose by the same margin to Fraserburgh B. The next round of matches saw the 2 winners play as Montrose once again win, this time it was closer and 11-8. The 2 losing teams from the first session battled away but Boddam won by a score of 11-4. Scottish Universities were not letting their results get to them but they still lost their third match 11-2 against Fraserburgh B and they were delighted to have gained the experience of playing in bigger events and said they would be back next year. Montrose won their third match of the group 11-9 against Boddam & Cruden A to progress through along with Fraserburgh B.
Group 4
This group saw local favourites Cowdenbeath & Styx A paired together along with Boddam & Cruden B & Stonehaven B. The two Fife tems showed their intentions with comfortable wins aginast their opposition as Cowdenbeath beat Boddam 11-6 and Styx A beat Stonehaven B 11-2. The next round of matches saw the Fife teams play as Cowdenbeath ran out comfortable winners 11-4. On the other table Boddam B were edging out Stonehaven B by a score of 11-5. The third round of matches saw Cowdenbeath, who were already through, against Stonehaven B which Cowdenbeath ran out 11-6 winners and on the other table it was Styx A v Boddam B wher ehte winners would progress through. Styx A got off to a goos start and never looked back as they won the match 11-2 to go through as runners up to Cowdenbeath.

Quarter Finals
The first Quarter final saw tournament favourites Fraserburgh A drawn against Styx A. Fraserburgh got off to a good start with some good finishes combined with some Styx mistakes. The frames all seemed to going in one direction as fraserburgh raced into a 10-3 lead. The Styx team then came out of the blocks and rattled off the next 8 frames to take the match 11-10. The delight from the Styx Team and their supporters was a sight to behold as was the look on the Fraserburgh teams faces as they saw their what was thought unassailable lead taken away from them with Jason Harley coming off the bench to win the decider.
The second quarter final saw Stonehaven A against Fraserburgh B. Both sides had some quality players in them and it was thought that this would be a close match. These thoughts proved right once again as the frames were exchanged until Stonehaven A stepped up a gear to win the frames required and went through to the semis with a score of 11-8.
The third quarter final saw Montrose v Aberdeen B. Montrose started this match as favourites but the spirit of Aberdeen B which had taken them through the group was still apparent as they fought for every frame and eventually won through by 11-8.
The last quarter final saw Cowdenbeath play Elgin A. These were two evenly matched teams and it was hard to pick a winner beforehand. Elgin had experience on their side but Cowdenbeath had the fight in them. Early frames were exchanged until Cowdenbeath built up a small lead. Elgin tried in vain to battle back into the match but Cowdenbeath won through to the semi finals with a 11-7 victory.

Semi Finals
Cowdenbeath played Aberdeen B and Cowdenbeath built up an early lead which Aberdeen B were unable to peg back. Frames were exchanged but the early lead was enough to take cowdenbeath into their first national final.
Styx A were still on a high from their quarter final win and didn?t get off to the best start in this match as Stonehaven A won the first 3 frames. Styx then woke up and eventually drew level at 5-5 before pulling away for a 11-7 win to take them into the final with Cowdenbeath to make it an all Fife affair.

Styx A got off to a great start in the final by winning the first set 6-1. Cowdenbeath rallied a bit in the second set but the alcohol intake had proved to be too much for them as they battled away for the frames. Styx A then started winning the frames again and eventually won the match 11-5 to take the title of Scottish Interleague Champions 2006.

A final note for the event is that I would like to thank all of the teams and players who took part in the event. The reports back from the players, team captains & spectators were tremendous to say the least and we hope that we can take this event from strength to strength in the years to come.
