Archives: Warwick and York monopolise the Universities Nine-ball Championship
Posted on Friday, December 09 2005 @ 18:46:51 GMTby adpladmin
9-Ball Pool News UPC_Chair writes The University of Warwick retained the Team Championship with a victory over the University of York but York?s James Lee turned the tables in the Individual Championship by beating Warwick?s James Eaton in an exciting weekend of nine-ball pool at Riley?s, Solihull.

In the Team Championship, holders Warwick sailed through the early rounds before overcoming a strong challenge from Cardiff 1sts in the semi finals. Similarly York were a class above the rest, including a meeting with their own second team, until an exciting semi-final win over Bristol going down to the final rack in which York?s Tim Lister prevailed over BUSA Snooker Champion Pritesh Patel.

This set up a great final in which Warwick?s James Eaton exacted revenge for his Individual Championship final defeat by York?s James Lee by winning his set 5-3. Warwick?s Stuart Jell had come back from a 1-4 deficit against York?s Tim Lister and were locked 4-4 with Lister at the table whilst York?s Jonathan Wight lead Warwick?s Craig Turze 3-2. It looked like going to the final match but Lister failed to take out the clearance leaving Stuart Jell to mop up the remaining balls and take the title back to Warwick.

Notable performances included Nottingham 1sts and Stirling 1sts both reaching Quarter-finals on their first attempt, beaten by Bristol and York respectively. The big shock of the weekend was the early departure last season?s finalists Durham 1sts thrown into the one-loss bracket by York 2nds and then eliminated by Stirling 1sts.

The theme of the Individual Championship was one of surprises not least the Last 64 exit of last season?s runner-up, Warwick?s Stuart Jell. The semi-final draw kept the defending Champion, Gloucestershire?s Damian Donovan, and two-time Eight-ball Champion, Nottingham?s Paul Edwards, apart. However neither made the final with Warwick?s James Eaton disposing of Donovan 5-2 whilst James Lee took advantage of missed chances by Edwards to sneak in 5-4. In the final James Lee made the early running and James Eaton could never quite rein him in and he ran out a 5-3 winner.

Attention now switches to Eight-ball with the British Universities Finals 24-26 February preceded by the qualifying competition on 11th February. Entries close 13th January, 2006.
