2004/5 Scottish Masters Champion
Darren Matthew

The 16th & 17th October 2004 saw the annual Scottish Masters take place at the Belslea Bar in Fraserburgh. With the relaxed dress code there were a number of new players to the event trying the higher level for the first time. With the open draw there was the chance of some tougher first round matches for the tour seeded players but they mostly managed to avoid each other at this stage. Several top ADPL players were in attendance...

There were a number of surprise first round results as a couple of the players expected to progress were eliminated. ADPL Scottish Internationals Graham Reid, Mark Gravener & Mike Clark all went out, with the latter unfortunate to get the in-form Holburn player, and Scottish Tour number 1, Darren Matthew in the first round. Ex Aberdeen singles champion Reid was beaten by 17 yr old current Aberdeen Singles Champion Pat McCarron. Mark lost 7-5 to Stuart Lawrence and Deryck Scott lost 7-2 to Murray May of Brechin. There was also wins for father and son Phil Craig Snr & Jnr of Aberdeen.

The last 16 stage saw some interesting matches with the pick of the round being Phil Craig Snr v Darren Matthew. Another tough match for Darren but he came through with a 7-3 win. There were also good wins for Murray May as he came from 3-0 down to defeat Raymond Mowat 7-6 and also Scottish Junior Singles champion Phil Craig Jnr in thrashing Ivan Thompson 7-1.With wins for Neil Smith, Allan Anderson, Barry Calder, Ian Soutar & Mike Keddie the quarter final line up was now known. Pat McCarron bowed out 7-2 at this stage to Allan Anderson.

The first quarter final between Neil Smith & Allan Anderson was a tactical battle as both players tied each other up with Allan eventually overcoming Neil 7-5. The next match was Philip Craig Jnr v Murray May. In the early frames Murray had the slight run of the balls but still had to take out the finishes. Murray continued with some good potting to win the match 7-3. The third match pitched Barry Calder v Darren Matthew. This was Darren?s third tough match in a row and as the frames went back & forth it was quite even until a mistake by Barry cost him the match as Darren won 7-5. The last quarter final saw Ian Soutar v Mike Keddie. The first frame saw mistakes by both players with Mike eventually winning it and the next couple too to build an early lead. The next 4 frames were shared and then Mike took the last 2 to win through 7-2.

The first of the semi finals saw Allan Anderson race into an early 4-0 lead over Murray May but a miss on the black in the 5th frame gave Murray the lift he needed as he cleared up to reduce the deficit. With some tactical frames ahead Murray was starting to claw his way back into the match as he managed to get back to 5-5. Now we were down to a best of 3 to reach the final. The tactical frames were not finished yet as they shared the next 2 frames to take the match to a decider. After mistakes from both players , Murray finally potted the winning black to reach his first final.

The second semi final was a complete contrast to the first as this was an all out attacking match with both players missing nothing. Both players were producing finishes from the break. It looked like the finishes from the opponent wasn?t having any effect on either player as they both produced some good shots under pressure. With a final result of 7-4 to Darren, Mike had no complaints over the way he played. The 11 frame match was all over in about 30 minutes.

The final saw Darren as a big favourite to land his third title of the year following his 2 tour wins. With Murray showing some nerves early on Darren took full advantage and raced into an early lead. With the next few frames shared and Murray?s nerves disappearing the match looked to going close. But with the form Darren was in it was always going to be tough. Darren raced through the next couple of finishes to leave Murray on the wrong end of a 7-3 defeat. Darren is now the Scottish Tour number 1 and is confirming himself as the top player in Scotland.
